First Concepts / Primeiros Conceitos

Posted in Concepts, Joana with tags , on March 10, 2011 by Dilly

Hello!
We’re here to say again that we did not die and we continue to work on this project called Detail Library. Daniel is finishing the animation of the first scene and Damasceno has done some concepts in watercolor to put some of the ideas for the look of the short on the paper.

Here are the concepts with his comments:

I like the loose spots. Using some specific elements to characterize the space. I believe we can also work with unorthodox mix of color – as well as the application of white lines to better define some parts.
The grid, tree, lamppost and the curb “denounce” the scenario – that is nothing less than a big colored spot
The edges disappearing increase our sense of “observers”.

Test of the background with the use of black, instead of white line. Therefore, if the edges are not respected it can work too.
PS: But I prefer to use less lines, limiting them to areas that best characterize the space.

Background with the use of white lines to help define the shape. I believe this is the best way to go. Use black and white lines in the scene very sparingly.
PS: rough scan.

Setting study
Here we have interesting urban details (poles and wiring) and an undefined horizon (always ending on white paper).

Market research with an element in the foreground to “spy” Joana. Still not my favorite, but I like the spots.

It is this kind of blurring of stain and how to get there that has been making me prefer to do everything analog for Joana.

The Files
In a note apart, we would like to announce that all the published files of the Library will be stored and organized in a folder structure that can be navigated on the link located next to “The Files “. We’re still putting all the files there and we also don’t have a nice design for it yet. (we use fileNice).

More than one short! – Mais que um curta!

Posted in Announcements, Concepts on September 7, 2010 by Dilly

About one year ago The Detail Library stopped being only about an animated short, and now the project involves the connection of multiple narratives. Anyway we choose to start off with animation. For that reason we antecipate the next productions. We already have the animatic for the second short and we’re working on the script for the third.

Here are some concepts from the short Joana (wich already have the animatic)

And here are some concepts arts from the short Burians (script in development):

Main Character’s Design 01

Posted in Concepts on July 7, 2008 by Dilly

In the process of finding the right look for our main character many things were tried and tossed away. Here’s a part of that process and the final design for it. On screen you’ll only see him with his raincoat on, although, during the design process I usually made him naked first, since he’s body is so peculiar. And I really wanted the raincoat to be “on” something. Gadanthara (that’s the name of our main character, later in some other post we dive deeper in story maters.) is quite a good challenge artistically speaking, his dark body in front of dark environments, the thin dark hands that need to be able to make subtle moves in a way that it doesn’t end up looking like a black gloo or something. But he’s quite the good guy, so we do what we need to make his world believable. Enjoy it!

One of the first ones, that’s not even a raincoat! And his wearing this weird paints…

our fist chubby try out

clothes on!

The stretch line, trying out lots of different silhouettes in order to avoid missing something for not experimenting.

Almost there

And here he is:

Some Storyboard

Well, the animatic is complete. We have some timing adjustments, but everything for the storytelling is finished.
Here is some random shots from our storyboard:

Color Concepts II

Posted in Concepts with tags on March 31, 2008 by Dilly

The animatic is almost done, the first models are being made, but for now I’m posting more color concepts, it’s nice to compare with the first ones (published in Sunday, September 30, 2007).

Probably now we can update the blog with more frequency, since we have a ton of draws.

We are still alive!

A couple of months passed and we didn’t post anything here. But this not means that we are not working. We are working, but some things get slowed (mostly) because of Work/Job.

Things that are (or mostly) done:

– The script is finally done. We are still open to making some adjustments, mainly because of the design that the film will take.
– The “Production Roadmap” is basically ready. We must make some adjustments mainly because of how (and when) the Contributors will Contribute.
– The research on the techniques and tools that we need to use / learn is mostly done.

Now for the actual begin of the “heavy” production we need to finish de Animatic (hopefully this month will be done) and much more Concepts. Also a Meeting with all the Team and Contributors will be realized in the middle (or end, if late) of this month.

At least a nice sketch of the city made by Sergio Saleiro:
